Handrail height

In Alberta, Canada the code is 32"-38" for stairs to top of handrail measured from the edge of nosing.

For balconies is 36" if the balcony is not more than 6' dropoff below.
a 42" handrail is needed for balconies higher than 6'.

Handrail height

Handrail or guardrail? a handrail is ONLY found on stairs. Typically 34" - 38" but your local codes may be different. A guardrail is fall prevention on flat surfaces (and next to stairs) and is usually MIN 36" - 42" depending upon your local codes.
