Gravel for footing?

I've got a hole dug in my basement for a footing. The dirt is incredibly hard and difficult to dig out. Since this is in the basement and not subject to freezing, do I need a gravel bed before I pour the concrete?
Edit, nevermind found my answer. On undisturbed soil.

I tear things down and build them up.

Gravel for footing?

Gravel wouldn't be the norm. As you found out, undisturbed soil is usually the way to go.
