Getting ready ro refinish my hardwoods, I would like to add to it as well...

As you can see from the pic, I have a tile kitchen floor and hardwoods throughout the dinning room, living room and halls. I am getting ready to sand and change the color of the floors. I would like to ditch the tile in the kitchen and carry the hardwoods throughout. I am guessing my best course of action would be:

Find unfinished hardwood flooring that matches the size and style of my current.

Rip up the kitchen floor and install the new unfinished flooring.

Sand the existing floors.

Finish all floors at once.


Is that right? Anything to add? And specifically, would you guys seperate the kitchen from the other rooms with thresholds or just carry the floor through smoothly?

i'm guessing when you rip up the tile floor, you're going to find the same flooring as the next room. be careful taking up the tile and you may not need/want new. otherwise, your ideas are all ok. although you did not say how dark you are planning on staining, keep in mind the lighter the color, the better it hides *whatever* dirt, scratches, etc.

Thanks. I am quite curious to see whats underneath. I am going with brazilian cherry I think on the floors. We'll do our best to keep it clean. No kids, no pets and we don't wear our shoes in the house.

i wonder why they laid the board and tile over the wood in the first place? you may find a huge grease stain or burn spot or something... lol
but you may luck out like we did in our last home and fine nice wood under that was easily cleaned up, sanded and refinished like new.

So I pulled a tile underneath the sink area, turns out its that it's plywood underneath.

just the tile? it looks like there's a sheet of backerboard/ply under the tiles, yes.
also, under the sink may not have nice flooring. i've seen it torn out because of water damage and redone with a sheet of plywood.
try to _carefully_ pry up the tile and board at the existing hardwood floor level in that doorway you show and take a peek. that should tell you what continues under it.

I think the picture is decieving... the tile and the hardwood are exactly the same height at that threshold. What you see is some strange attempt at a threshold - its a different color grout used to transition between the wood and tile... from under the sink, I pried up the first tile toward the floor, which means its the tile located in front of the cabinet, not directly under, and its definitley ply underneath....

The only slight problem is, I'm now having slight doubts as to whether I should repalce the kitchen tile with newer updated tile rather than continuing the hardwoods - what would be your opinion? Anyone else?

oic, yes, that is hard to tell. welp, your options are wide open now! retile, cork, hardwood, carpet, whatever you like!

so many variables..... dogs? kids? grandkids? traffic? how klutzy you are... lol it seems to me for your case to be what styles do you like? what can you afford? what does the WIFE want????? i'll be doing my new kitchen in cork, if that helps.

Thanks. No kids, no dogs, no pets. My wife and myself. We're very careful people. I'm thinking from aesthetics only. I think I'm going to continue the hardwoods throughout. What's the best way to determine what kind of wood floor is there now?

By the grain. Look online to match the grain to pictures available. Most are oak, some old floors are pine.
