General Contractor license and other licenses

What exactly can a general contractor do? I know they organize construction jobs. Can they pull all permits and do all of the work, or do they have to find licensed subcontractors? Also, what type of license do framers usually get?

Each state and locality have different licensing requirements.

What area are you planning to work in?

General Contractor license and other licenses

Its different in every state, and some states differ by county or town. Go to your state gov website and search for contractor license. Generally speaking, a general contractor pulls permits and can do the work or hire subs. Electric and plumbing must be done by a licensed electrician or plumber (with a few exceptions) so unless you are a general contractor AND a licensed electrician or plumber, you'll have to sub those out. The license requirements for a framer range from getting a GC license to nothing at all. It all depends on where you live/work.

I live in Florida. I was just curious as to how the licenses work. I know you have to get a license for air conditioning, electrical, roofing, plumbing. I just didn't know if a general contractor could do those trades as well. For example, they would have in house roofers that did all of they roofing jobs.
