garage remodel, drywalling around obstructions
I am installing drywall in a garage that doesn't currently have drywall. There is wiring, water & gas pipes that were run in front of framing which makes drywall impossible. Rerunning the wiring and pipes is not an option. I've seen sometimes pipes are run on the surface of drywall, but that must have been done after drywall is up. I don't see how drywalling behind pipes is possible. So what options do I have now? I can either drywall up to the pipes and leave the framing in the area with pipes exposed, or soffit it?
Another obstruction is the garage door hardware. How do I install drywall around that? Does the drywall normally go between the framing and the hardware?
My garage door hardware goes on top of the drywall. I think for a garage it's best to have everything sealed with fire-code drywall and tape, especially the ceiling if there is living space above. Can you frame around the pipes?
This is an old thread but curious to know the path you took to resolve. In addition to what you stated I've thought of furring the wall studs but that is a lot of work. So, unless I hear an alternative, I'm likely to do a soffit. In my sitiation the conduit and gas line are straight shots along the wall and they are 6" apart.
