Garage Rafter Ties - Can I remove them?

Hi Guys,

I have a 18X20 attached garage that had 3 2X4 collar ties running the 20' span as well as 3 rafter ties about half way up the pitch. I just removed the collar ties and intalled 2X6 joists 16"o.c. along the 20' span, with a beam running the 18' span. Is it safe to remove the 3 remainig 1"X2" rafter ties?

IMHO, you should not have removed anything. The collar ties keep the walls from spreading outward. The rafter ties keep the roof from sagging in the middle.

Where are you located ?
Do you have a picture ?
I think your terminolgy is off

Rafter ties keep the walls from spreading
If you removed 2x4 rafter ties & installed 2x6 not a problem
Even better since there were only 3 before & now you have rafter ties every 16"

Why do you want to remove the collar ties ?

Ok, I guess my terminology is off a little bit. I had 3 2x4 20' joists/rafter ties on the top plate. I removed the 3 2x4s and replaced them 2x6 joists and installed a beam, halving the 20' span. I still have 3 1x2 collar ties about half way up the peak, can I remove those?

For what reason, would you want to remove these? Do you need head-room?

1. Where are you located? CA or FL and a lot of others, you will need special ties for high wind or seismic areas.

2. How many nails and what size did you use at the rafter/joist, and laps over the new beam? (solid blocking?)

3. 1x2's, are you sure?

4. Rafter ties are required every 4', so you should have had 4.........

Be safe, Gary

1. I'm in California

2. I'm not sure how many nails my contractor used to attach the joist to the rafter. The joists lay on top of the beam and are toe nailed, I'm thinking about adding 90 degree straps. The rafters also have blocking throughout.

3. They might be 1x3 or 1x4

4. The house was built in the 50's and there are only 3.

I'm not planning on storing much weight up there, but I might add some insulation between the rafters as a radiant barrier. The peak is only about 4.5", so it would be much easier to move around while I'm doing this if the collar ties where removed.
