Garage Rafter is Split...repair??

New homeowner here...

Just found out one of the rafters in my garage attic is split in the middle and causing issues with the ceiling drywall.

The drywall touches the overhead gas supply, and i figured it was due to nail pops- i started screwing up the ceiling and now you can really see the problem. My concern is the rafter is falling on each side of the split- and I do not want it to fall and break the gas line. How/Should this be fixed?

thanks for the help!

Looks like a ceiling joist not a rafter.
Looks like someone cut it.
Your going to have to sister another one next to it, full length would be best.
Use constrution adhesive and screws to attach it.

If there is access to get a new joist into the attic space that will work best. raise up what is there with temporary bracing against the ceiling in the room below and install the new joist in the attic..

I'd sister the new one on some 1/2" shims at bearing points to get the broken one on the same plane as the rest. This will give you "wriggle room" to get it exact or plus a hair so it is level after removing the bracing.
