Question

garage insulation question

I live in North Dakota and am looking at insulating, sheetrocking, and heating a detached garage. What type of insulation would I need to use? What rating would I need?

garage insulation question

Hi,

I don't live in North Dakota, but where I live, the minimum insulation required for a heated garage is R-13. It is not going to be used as a living space/area, so the requirements aren't the same as in a home.
If you have 2x6 walls, use R-19.
If you really want to keep the place warm, you can go with an R-30 for the ceiling joists. R -30 isn't cheap on the costs.

My 2 cents from New England

garage insulation question

I'm in W. Canada, and we too would use R-19 in the walls (2x6).As much as you can afford in the ceiling. You can add more later, too, if you like. As a reference, here, in a home it is required to have R-40 in the ceiling. Don't forget to vapour barrier on the "warm-in-winter" side of the insulation before the sheetrock..
