Garage door width?

Is an 8' wide garage door adequate for a small car (Subaru-type) or is it going to be a PITA and a 9' is preferable? I know that 9' is tight for a 1/2 ton p/u, but they have larger mirrors. thanks.

8' might be OK, but think about resale value. 9' is the modern standard, 8' is the older standard.

8' is going to look small and old, and make anyone with an SUV hesitant to buy your house.

M3: thanks. i am fighting to get as much bearing at the foundation as i can, and was thinking 8' would be helpful for that , but a real minimum. i think my dad's are 8', and we used to get a '65 suburban through them, but man you had to watch the mirrors like a hawk. resale is a concern, too, but not high on my priority list. that'll be a problem for my sons, not me.
