garage door removal and replacement
I have a older, heavy wood garage door. I need to remove the door for a day. Can I, when the door is open, brace the door, undo the 4 bolts on each side of the door that hold it to the bracket and slide it off? Any spring related surprises to watch for? I assume, since there is no tension on the springs in the door open position, there should not be a problem.

There will still be tension on the springs. You can lock the springs using vise grips.Relieve the pressure on the spring using a bar and clamp securely. Do this with the door down. Be very careful if you decide to attempt this. Many people have been hurt working on these doors. You can unhook the cables and take the panels out one at a time. Note these wooden doors are very heavy.

Garage door springs store a considerable amount of energy which can cause serious injuries, call in a pro.

This isn't a DIY project for safety's sake alone. I was on a jobsite right after a carpenter had his lower jaw and face removed by a garage door torsion bar during an attempt to remove it to get at the framing.

I too know of several injuries associated with doors and their springs. Serious stuff even though it looks straight forward. If you don't KNOW exactally what your doing please call a pro. There are about a dozen different spring/door combinations around. You say it's older and heavy, that means your springs are heavy duty too.

Stay safe!

Is my described technique faulty or, is it always dangerous?

I recall changing springs a few years ago on another garage and all it took was: door was open and braced, 3 guys pulled down on the spring and hooked it onto the bottom chain.

If spring changing is less hazardous I can

1) brace the door open
2) release the springs
3) remove the door
