Garage Ceiling Shelving Building Know How

I am wanting to build some shelving from my two car garage ceiling that I can store leftover lumber and such. Does anyone have any suggestions, links, plans, pics on an easy, cost effective plan for me to build? Thanks.

It starts with how the rafters (more likely truss chords) are built...
and whether the dead load can be supported from them ... or whether something needs to be done to reinforce them first.

Beyond that's it's just a question of how pretty you want to make it.

I'll get some pics sent. My garage has a finished ceiling. No exposed rafters.

Attached are some pics of my garage. As I hope that the pics show to you, the useable ceiling storage area is broken up into two areas separated by a middle dropdown section. The front section(the area farthest from the garage door) is approx. 103 x 240 and the area on the side of the garage door is approx. 134 x 240 with the garage door opener rail separating the section almost exactly in the middle.

I hope that this allows you to give you provide me with necessary information. Thanks!

Ask around among your neighbors for who has either had reason to open up their garage ceiling or who didn't opt for the sheetrock ... and hope that tells enough to base a plan on.

In short... if you want to suspend real weight (more than a bicycle or a pair of ski's) you will need to add lumber *into* the framing. Adding something above the framing would be even better but that ship has sailed.

along with hanging from the ceiling how about some type of angled 45 degree brace that takes the front portion of the shelf weight back to the wall and not just hang the whole system off of the ceiling. with the angled brace it is a combination of the two...
