Hi, we are trying to insulate our 2 car garage ceiling to use it as a workshop during the winter. We'd like to put up celing joists and attach them to the rafters. I've looked through the site and know how to do that but we have a board (2x8) going from the top plate of the back wall and attached to the top plate of the side wall? What is that support for? Is it to hold in/up the side wall? Is it necessary once we put in collar ties? I can't find the answer anywhere, please help, Thanks Jay

Sounds like it was installed to keep the walls square while they were building them
Might not be needed - do you have a picture?
