garage or carport
My mothers bungalow needs a garage or carport to keep the snow off her chevy pickup. She wants the least expensive option between a Detached garage set behind the house at the end of the driveway or an extension to the house off the gable end.
I think the carport will be the way to go pricing wise but am not sure how the carport is supported along the existing exterior wall of the house. The carport would also have a gable roof and in effect an extension of her house's roof.
We did that. Actually a contractor did it for us. He poured four footings for 2x6 posts. He got big laminated beams. Each beam spans two posts and terminates inside the end of the house, resting on the top plate. There's another big beam for the middle span, supported by an additional post (with footing -- 5 in all).
If you don't want to open the house, or are concerned with putting weight on it, or making the connections or whatever, you could put a post a foot our so out from the end wall. A lumber yard (not a big box store, but a real lumber yard) can size the beams for you. Ask about the proper fasteners to use.
