Gambrel roof question

Hey all, got a question on a gambrel roof for a shed spanning 16 feet. Do you think I can get away get away with making it out of 2x4's, or do I need 2x6's?

Gambrel roof question

Welcome to the forum!

Do you need a permit?

Are any snow loads involved?

What do the plans say?

Gambrel roof question

I have a permit.
I live in Iowa, so we get snow.
I dont have plans, just flying by the seat of my pants. Drew my own basic plans. It will have a loft. A friend told me to use engineered trusses for the loft floor, (cheaper and stronger than using 2x10 or 2x12's I guess.) All on 16 by 20 foot pad.

Gambrel roof question

Looks like your doing a fine job on that slab. Are you flying by the seat of your pants, with the cement work, also?
In my area, a job of that size would require a permit and plans would have to be submitted, along with the permit application.
I built a Gambrell roof once, only it was for a 8X12 shed.
They are fun to figure out. In my case, I was able to draw a circle on a sheet of plywood and then drew cords from the circle to establish my rafter lengths and angles.
This was of course before computers. now you can get programs to do all this for you.
Do you plan to stick build the roof, with a knee wall to support the hip? If so, the top rafters would be relatively short and I would think that 2X4s on 16" centers would work.

I agree on getting plans drawn for the permit. At least read more before proceeding. You may need to add CMU's to get the siding/sheathing 8" above grade to prevent rot, re-bar in the slab to hold the block, "J" bolts to hold the p.t. bottom plate, etc......
