Gambrel house with loft and open to below

We are interested in building a new home with a gambrel roof. We would like to make use of some of that space as a loft overlooking part of the open floor plan below. The house would be a very basic rectangle or possibly a square. Is it even structurally possible to have a loft and open below? What would the roof trusses look like? We are in the very beginning stages and looking for info at this point.

The log house my wife and I built ourselves has a loft that's open to the first floor. But we have a cathedral ceiling so there aren't any roof trusses.

We really like the open feeling of the loft. Rather than a short wall along the edge of the loft, we have wrought iron railings. My wife drew up a design and we had a blacksmith make them for us.
