Gable Roof Span

How does one calculate the span of a Gable roof when determining the size of rafters to use. Is each plane considered a span or is the span the distance across the entire width of the roof? It seems to me that a gable roof is stronger than a shed roof since the rafters support eachother.

Actually, the rafters do not support each other... unless you use a ridge BEAM (not ridge 'board'). Then, in effect, you have two shed roofs butted together at the top.

But if you remove 1/2 of a gable framed roof or the rafter ties/ceiling joists, it will fall down: http://books.google.com/books?id=E5S...raming&f=false
