French Doors That don't Match!

Exactly my point, Terry. The lumberyard can not help you. The contractor should, but does not have to. It is your responsability to check and approve all work before final payment. This is NOT a hidden defect, which would be your only defense for a contract that has expired.

And it's the contractor responsibility to check and make sure he installed the right door and matches the door 3/16" away from it. If you were the contractor, wouldn't you have made sure the door fits right and matches the door next to it?

Yep, I would have, as a contractor or as a customer. I am being realistic about the situation as it is, not as it should have been though. A year and a half is beyond the contract time (I am assuming a one year guarantee). That is one of the reasons to have a contract, to clearly define the time limits of the contractural relationship.

My point is that there is no other way to look at it but it being the contractors fault. He says that his lumberyard screwed up, bla, bla, bla. So what, now the lumberyard finally pulls through and sends the door. The so called contractor installs the door and never checks it, brilliant!!

How does any professional contractor not check a door? I don't care how much it was covered, the cover comes off BEFORE I install the door and it gets checked.

Even if it was a one year guarantee, that would be on the door matching the one next to it, not a completely different door. The contractor should have come back and fixed the problem and gave him the RIGHT DOOR even if it was 3 years later!!!

Sorry tscarborough, but my contractor never specified in his contract, how long it would take him to finish the job- and let me tell you- there were many days lost for me when he said he would be here - and I waited ALL DAY with not even a phone call. The entire job took way longer than it should have.

I even waited 4 weeks with just sheetrock on the walls, for his painters to show up- two kids to feed and a microwave in the LR, bathroom sink to wash necessary dishes! The kitchen cabinets--- and French doors were in my garage - soaking up moisture for those 4 weeks!

It's his fault - no question, hands down- and I feel he should pay for the one door to be replaced. I just checked w/another lumber yard and it's gonna cost me, without a GC discount - $307 not incl tax, to replace one door.

I am certainly not defending your contractor, Ma'am, just being realistic about the situation.

teyyb, question, lumber yards do not traditionally make their own doors, they order from a manufacturer, is this the case with your doors.
Similar problem but time was on our side, Contractor went bust, a client's door was a problem, we explained directly to the manufacturer, they replaced the problem door, we paid the freight only. Cheaper than a new door, cheaper than court.
