Free standing patio

Ok, so I have a patio floor (brick over concrete) that is 16' spread center on center for the end posts. The brick/concrete is approximately 6" thick. The patio will be 8' tall and I will be including center posts in the 16' span; it will be a trellis style patio. MY question is, do I need to cut away the brick/concrete pad where the posts will be and install 3' footings for the posts, or can I install all threads (5/8"x7) with Simpson set epoxy and secure the post zmax bases in that manner? Header beams will either be 4x12 or 6x12; haven't decided.
