Framing a Wall with a Soffit on Top

sethr Newbie   Join Date: May 2007 Posts: 3	Framing a Wall with a Soffit on Top Hi all, I’m framing my basement and I have a question. Can I build a soffit on top of an outside wall? I have pipes running the length of the basement along the outside wall. I want to build a soffit to enclose the pipes and attach the top plate to the soffit instead of the joists. Is that possible? It would be shallow soffit and I could build it with 2x4 instead of 2x2. What do you think? I would just be so much easier than rerouting all the supply lines. Thanks for any advise. Seth R.

RippySkippy Member     Join Date: Feb 2007 Location: Ames, Iowa Posts: 1,233	Framing a Wall with a Soffit on Top It's done many times and will look fine when finished. Becareful not to hide those things that shouldn't be hidded i.e. gas pipe connections boxes etc.
