Framing a garage roof -Advice please

My DH and I plan to build a freestanding garage. We will not be pouring the slab, however, we would like to build the garage ourselves. Our plan is for the garage to be 28' x 28' with a hip roof and vaulted ceilings. My husband would like to put a lift in there.

I have built several outbuildings but they had simple shed roofs and they were much smaller than a garage. We are both very handy DIYers. I was wondering if someone could recommend a good reference source for the roof construction as I described it. The walls are simple but the roof has us perplexed and a little concerned.

Hip roof is not that hard but add the vaulted ceiling and you are getting tricky. You have to have a bottom cord somewhere keeping the walls from spreading out from the roof load. I would suggest that you talk with a truss company about building you trusses that provide the vaulted cieling hight you need.
