Frame around back of block fireplace in Garage


My garage is currently unfinished with the exception of the fire-rated drywall on the shared wall of the garage. Also on this wall is the back of the fireplace that projects into the garage. I was wondering what, if anything, I have to do to frame around the chimney. I would like to build two built in storage cabinets on each side, and a flip down work table across the back. It does not get warm on the back when we have a fire, and the chimney was inspected and cleaned at the beginning of last season.

I can't speak for NY code, but HERE in WI, you would need to keep any combustable framing (wood) 2" away from the block in the scenario posted. I know it sounds like overkill, but when you enclose the backside of that chimney, it will trap heat inside.......
