found crack in foundation - how bad is it?

While installing an egress window - the contractor found a crack in the foundation under the girder. I've attached a pic of the crack and another of the girder above it. How bad does it look? Is this something that I can fix with over the counter stuff? The contractor suggested just putting a 2x8 underneath it for add'l support - what do you think?

As Forrest would say: "Crack Happens"

In other news the sky is blue.

Does that mean that it's not bad, and to leave it alone?

That one looks a bit more invasive to me.

Most foundation cracks are more aesthetic than structural. That one doesn't look to good to me given where it is and the crumbling nature of the crack.

lol- I was wondering the same thing - I mentioned that to him, and he said that he noticed it before working and mentioned to me on the phone. I'm actually friends with him - so I trust him, plus since the crack seems to go up to the girder - I'm guessing that's where it started (layman's view).

Not a time to "think" about what it is, you need to KNOW if it's poured or cmu's, if cmu's it could be the parging that's cracked then a simple fix, or it could be the cmu's and parging failing.

Did a google / wikipedia search to find out what CMU's and "parging" is. IF I'm understanding correctly CMU's mean cinder blocks and parging is 1/4" - 1/2" inch of finish put on top

How can I tell what I have? (though perhaps you can tell from the first pic as the crack goes about 1/2")

Can you see any of your foundation from outside of the house??, look for mortar joints of the blocks.

Which means it's probably a poured concrete foundation, I've never seen a crack like the one in your pic, looks like it could be something serious, best thing would be to have a structural engineer have a look at it, can you see from outside if those cracks go all the way through??
