Footings for small pole shed
I've offered to construct a small potting shed for a family friend and am wondering what type of footing I will need. The shed itself is only 10'x8' and will have small prefabbed roof trusses. How far down should I set the posts and does it really need a concrete footing for something this small? Soil is relatively sandy. Thanks in advance!

Assuming you do not need a building permit, and assuming there is no long term plan to store heavy items or occupy the shed, you have several choices. You can put in sonotube concrete foundation cylinders at the corners and perhaps in the middle. Or you can save time and money by digging down perhaps a foot, backfilling with crushed stone, and using concrete blocks for the foundation. My shed is built that way, been there since 1959, no real foundation.

This works if you don't mind some settling and shifting of the shed. You don't even need a full course of block, just one at each corner, and one in the middle of each side. Just make sure you remove all organic soil before placing the crushed stone for support.

Post needs to be set below the frost line. If it's just a potting shed then just back fill with some #57 stone. That way it will self drain when watering and your not standing in mud.

I built a pole building about 12' by 24"

Used 6 PT 4x4 Posts. Dug hole 40" deep, packed in about 3-4" of stone and set poles using the removed soil. I also have very sandy soil.

Used slag on floor to level out slope and provide a hard surface to park on.

I have 11+ feet clear under the rafters (used 16" poles), you can probably use 10 or 12 footers.
