Footing under a lally column?

I am getting ready to remove a load bearing wall between my kitchen and dinning room 13' span. We are planning to put a header in and create point loads at each end of the span.

On one end of the span, the structure the point load will transfer to is the block wall for the foundation, and the other end falls on a lolly column in the middle of my finished basement.

Question I have, is there anyway to know whether that column sits on a footing, or if it is just sitting on the slab, without tearing apart my tile floor in my basement?

Should I be worried about this?

Possibly you may find the "as-built" plans at your local Building Department.
Some BDs have them on microfiche and may let you make a copy of them.

Yes, you should be very worried about what it is you intend to do.
That is something normally out of the DIY range of abilities.

Andy.

All support columns should have been set on footings. As Andy said, it can't hurt to check.

Footing under a lally column?

Thanks guys.

Not planning to do this myself, and have had a structural engineer come in to draw up the plans and properly size the beam.

Just trying to understand if it is common practice to set the lolly column on a footing or if it may have been set just on the slab.

Hate to rip up my floor in my basement if I do not have to.

You can test for a footing without a great deal of disruption. Take a 12" long 1/2" masonry drill and drill next to the column. If you are still hitting concrete at 10" then you have a footing. Small hole to patch.

Yes, it is common practice. You are supposed to do this when the house is built. However, sometimes people (stupid people) take out columns and put them where they want on top of the slab with no footing below.
