Footing for exterior stairs

Hi all,
I'm going to be relocating the exterior stairs of an existing deck, the new stairs will foot in my back yard. I'm looking for the accepted size and configuration/depth of a good footing for the stairs, which will be a standard 36" wide or thereabouts. Thanks in advance if someone can make suggestions.

The bigger and thicker, the better. It gets expensive to haul out and rebuild. Obviously you will not be consulting an engineer.
