maximum hole size for electrical cable. Can holes be made with a drill and jig saw? Wood is too hard for hole saw. 100 yrs old.

The size of the hole depends on the size of the beam. How big of a hole do you need for a wire? You can drill a 1" hole in the middle of a 2x6.
Most holes in wood, would be done with a drill. Forget the jigsaw.

How big is this cable? Hole in the middle of the floor joist closer to the centre of the span would be the best choice.
can you do it ith a 1" auger or less?

I thought most codes stipulate no more than 1/3 of the size of the joist. That may be intended for other framing members.

I'm like the others, what size wire/cable?

If worried about the size of the hole, why not use insulated staples. Is the wood too hard for them? second story?

Ditto on forgetting the jigsaw.
