how do I support a second story deck not attached to the house?

Look into your building codes to accurately find which type and size of supports you need for the size of the structure being built. (don't forget that permit)

Why would you not want to attach your second story deck to the house?

There are lots of reasons not to attach when your close to the ground but I can’t think of any up high.
