I attempted to search to no avail, one post that looked promising (How to construct front porch stairs using concrete block) had no responses, and "floating stairs" leads to more aesthetic articles than what I am attempting to refer to: floating as in a floating deck, not attached to the house.
We've decided against a deck due to the (limited) size of the yard, but my original research led me to believe that when done right, a floating deck is superior to one attached to the house via a ledger board. Is the same true for stairs?
We badly need a set of decent stairs out the back for a 58" total rise. Right now it's something the previous owner or builder hacked together, not attached to the house (just leaning against it) and needless to say both the wife and kids are terrified of it.
I'd like to avoid having to do anything to the house and just build the stairs as a separate structure, unless it's a complete no-go. I am prepared to do it as "right" as it needs to be with no corners cut. Can/should this be done?
can you take a pic and post so we can get a better image
