Which flashing tape for Chimney flashing?

Hi all,

I will look into installing a new chimney flashing. I know that before installing the metal flashing around the chimney it is recomended to "seal" the edges. Some use black cement or tar and others use flashing tape. I would like to use adhesive flashing tape but most of the ones I have found seem to be aimed for windows and doors. Which one is recommendable? Where do I find it? (I already checked local stores but found nothing). Should I use the tape or the such called black cement?.

Thank you

you could use this tape its expensive tho and maybe overkill

Grace Ice and Water Shield would work, but you would have to buy a full roll.

If the flashings are done correctly, there is no need for the "Tape".

I think this is the product I was looking for. I would like to lay this water shield around the chimney and then on top of it add the metal flashing. As you said, it may not be nessesary but I rather take the extra step to ensure no leaks.

Which flashing tape for Chimney flashing?

You need to use counterflashing and not the tape. The roof and chimney should move independent of one another and when they do the tape, caulk, silicone, or polurethane are eventually going to fail. Properly done counterflashing would go down first. The flashing then goes down over the top.

Makes sense. That explains why when people use polurethan or black cement they eventually get leaks. You mentioned "counterflashing", this is the first time I hear this term. Can you explain what this is?. I know there is two "layers" of flashing when done properly. The first one is the 90 deg bend pieces all around the chimney, then we have a second layer on top of the first one to prevent water to leak from the top of the first layer. Is counterflashing the "first layer"?. I hope I did not make this sound confusing.

i think Ed and I thought you wanted to seal the step flashing before you counter flashed witch as Ed said if done properly is not needed but is in some flashing details

Flashing goes down first, runs under the shingles and turns up along the chimney vertically. Install the tape between the masonry and the top edge of the flashing. Fasten through the flashing and the tape. Counter flashing hangs down over the top of the flashing to protect the top edge and should be set in a reglet joint.

Yes, this is good. I did have an idea but I am new with the terminology. I like the cricket shown in this links. I have seen the same one on other tutorials but I have not been able to find one already made. I will keep looking, but if you guys know where I can find it let me know. Thanks
