Fix up an old fireplace firebox for gel-burning
Hello DIY Community,
This is my first post, and I'm hoping I can solicit some advice from the knowledge on here!

My wife and I recently moved into a 100 year old home and completely gutted/renovated the interior. One of the final pieces left to finish is a fireplace on the mail floor. I've installed a new marble surround and hearth, and built a new mantle.

The chimney is sealed off. I would like to install a gel-burning insert, however before I do this, I want to fix up the inside of the fireplace/firebox itself. The previous owner appears to have lined the firebox with cement and some kind of black paint-like coating that has chipped and cracked over time. Underneath this layer of cement, I can see brick masonry showing through the cracks. Any suggestions? Could I line the firebox with steel, or should I re-brick/tile the inside? Re-do the cement with another layer? I'm open to all suggestions. Here's what I've come across so far with no perfect solution. I know someone out there will have a great idea of an inexpensive and appropriate solution!!

Refractory liner is a bit pricey, and may be overkill since the box is already masonry and cement, and the gel inserts won't create much heat.

Fireback won't cover the unsightly mess the previous owner has left.

Fire wrapper might also be a bit over the top for a gel-burning insert.

Thanks so much in advance!

its the stuff they use at buffet tables

I'd use steel, then paint with stove paint.

Go on line and see if you can find any of the recalls on gel fuel, or on look for gel fireplaces and see what people that have bought them think.
Total waist of time and money.
Go all the way and have the gas company install vented gas logs or just go with electric.
