first floor problems

I have an older (1914) very large Chicago bungalow. My problem is there is a 8x8 beam supporting the center of the house. The joists meet on top of this beam. The original wooden posts are all gone except one. I would like to replace the wooden beam with a steel I beam and replace the jack posts with steel columns. I would like as much input as I can get on this problem.

You want do this kind of work DIY?

From your description of the present condition it sounds like the structure is already horribly compromised.

"The original wood posts are all gone except one".

WOW! I am not saying that this is something that can not be done DIY (probably shouldn't be done DIY though) but the place to start is to get a plan of action from a competent, licensed engineer.
