Fireplace remodel

I have a solid brick fireplace separating my kitchen and family room. I want to either take it completely out or convert it to gas/see thru fireplace with a less heavy material. I am going to have the floor joists repaired because the fireplace is too heavy. When the repair happens the fireplace bricks will crack. Does anyone have advice on the best way to tackle this?
