Fireplace Help

Hi,
My house was build in 1945. The fireplace was blocked in about 15 years ago when they put in oil central heating. I have open up the fire place, bricked the bottom and have a free standing grate, I had the chimney swept but when I lit the fire the smoke pours into the room. I have a square opening going up the chimney but either side of that I seem to have bricks and rubble that look like they have been thrown up there and stuck! I am not sure why they are there and if I take them out will my chimney breast fall down. They look like they are held up by fresh air!

I question that those bricks are your problem. How high is the top of the chimney with relation to any part of the house within 4'?? The chimney must be 2' above that for a proper draw.

Who did you get to sweep the chimney? I would reccomend having your chimney inspected by someone who is WETT certified. That rubble and loose brick could be from your liner collapsing.

To add to what "Joe Carola" says -
"Bricked the bottom"? -
The "firebox" - the "hearth"?
