fireplace framing

I'm putting in a 4-sided island fireplace in the middle of a 18ft vaulted ceiling room. I'd like to know of a good and solid way to frame above the fireplace as the fireplace is not load bearing.
I've talked to some framers that don't recommend the fireplace but I like the look of the 4 sided fireplace. They said it wouldn't be strong enough and quite flimsy.
I would obviously need to hang the framing from the ceiling but would something like angle iron instead of 2x4s be an alternative?
Any ideas would be welcome.

Steel framing preferrably 18g framing studs, not drywall studs (usually 20 or 25g).

Depending on your location you may need to special order the 18g.
