In your case, your fireplace flue....the whole chimney itself....
It should basically be sucking up the warm smokey air and venting it out without any additional overflow smoke, unless something is wrong with the air flow....
Normally, when you have a fire, even at the initial start of it, the smoke should just get 'sucked' right up. Sort of like what happens when you light a match next to a leaky window. The cold air suctions out the warmer air...
That is why I suggest looking at issue with the air flow...the flue...
