I want to remove brick surround on fireplace. Can I leave the wood burning insert and sheet rock over it.

Yes you can.....assuming that they brick is not supporting anything else.

You need to confirm that you do just have a fire box with a brick facing....

Sorry Chloe but there is no general answer to your general question.

You need to find out how the brick is placed around the fire box and if the fire box is a zero clearance type or not.

A zero clearance will allow combustible materials in close proximity to it, some others will not.

In short, you may be able to and remain safe or may not, we need more information.

Andy.

Who is the manufacturer of the wood burning insert?
If you can find out I would suggest googling them.
Their website should give you instillation instructions and the minimum distances to combustibles.
