Fire rated doors. What does it mean?

Hi,
So maybe this is a stupid question, but I'm curious what the different time ratings on fire-rated doors mean. Does 20 minutes mean that the door will withstand fire for 20 minutes, then start burning? Why do they have time ratings and not some other system of rating?

Thanks. I'm trying to figure out if I need a fire rated door and what it all means.

The fire rating you almost got right, but it starts burning when there is a fire, but it will withstand a fire for 20 minutes before it burns through.

I am curious as to what kind of door you are looking for, such as the door between the house and a garage, would need to be a 2 hour rating I believe.

Mark

You need a fire rated door if the building code for your specific application requires a rated door. The actual meaning of the rating is not so obvious; it is a function of the exact type of test that is run, and should not be taken to mean that the door will withstand a particular fire in your house for the rated time. In general, the higher the rating, the longer the door will protect the occupants from a fire on the other side, but not necessarily for the minute rating of the door.

Thanks for the responses. I'm just wondering what kind of door to get for a child's bedroom. Fire-rated to what degree.
