Finishing the basement- tons of insulation questions

We have just finished framing our basement. It's insulation time but my husband and I disagree on how much we need to insulate. The builder installed r-13 insulation already minus the concrete walls. We used a waterproof sealer over the concrete already. (FYI- we have lived here two years and have not had any moisture issues. In addition, the air temperature is comfortable year round in the basement) We framed using pressure treated 2X4X10's. We have asked several "experts" some who say insulating over the concrete is a must others who say its optional. What should we do? What is the worst thing that could happen if we skip that step?

Another question, we were going to insulate floors walls and ceilings in the home theater to muffle sound. Is it neccesary to use soundproof insulation or will the standard R-13 do?

What are the advantages to using the foam board type insulation v/s the R-type.

Regarding insulation for comfort - This is hotly debated and will depend on your climate and above or below grade.

As for sound proofing. Insulation will only give very minimal benefit. You would be better off using thicker, or dual layers of drywall. Other techniques will help as well. Insulation adds little value for this. Let me know if you want more details.

Consider using open cell foam insulation, rather than fiberglass insulation for your heating-control needs..

Fiberglass insulation can "muffle" some sound waves. Tho, there are other ways sound waves can be transmitted thru walls.

Read up on sound proofing in general and various methods:
