figuring lumber for a hip roof?

I am looking at building a 12x20 detached garage with a hip roof, I know how figure how many common rafters I need, but I am stuck trying how many 2x6's I need to for the jack rafters.

16" or 2' centers?

You need enough for the 12' ends to have full rafters plus any overhang times two.
so if your common rafter length is say 7' plus 2' overhang, add another 2' overhang to get 11' (12's work nicely), what you cut off your longest first jack becomes the shortest on the other side.

Clear as mud/
Basically you use your cut off to become the other side.

Order short than you'll know exactly what you need to finish.

Take your drawing to your local lumber yard and they will do the material take off for you when you buy material.
