fieldstone question - column problem

does anyone know how field stone was typically installed in the 1920's?

I have just purchased a home with fieldstone facade.. my guess is that instead of a cavity wall they adheared the stone directy to the sheathing.... any thoughts?

one more item... im a bit upset i didnt notice this when i inspected the house...

notice the columns on my front porch. i noticed today they are bowing outward quite a bit.. the previous owners have been adding mortar between to attempt to repair but i believe this is making the bowing worse with time.

any suggestions how to straghten out these columns? i was thinking i would chip out all the mortar in the cracks, jack the columns back so they are stright again, then remove one stone and drill into the wall beyond and mortar in a rod to tie the wall to the column. then remortar the crack and any joints that cracked when i jacked it. but im looking for more opinions..
