Fence panel / post width: 10' VS 8'

I'm replacing a 50' straight line run of a stockade fence.
Plan on buying individual pieces as opposed to the pre-made panels; I'd rather use PT 2x4's for the stringers as opposed to the 2x3's on the pre-made panel sections.

I'll be starting in the middle an existing fence where a previous section had been replaced and terminating at a heavy / stable 4" square metal post that is our strike post for an automatic gate for the drive.
In order to avoid the previous post and therefore not to have to dig out the old posts I plan on using 8' 2x4's and then when I get to the end I can either go with a 10' span or keep the 8' span and then a short 2' span just before the end at the metal gate post.

Is a 10' span using 2x4's acceptable? Pushing it?
My wife thinks a single 10' span would look better but I think an 8' & short 2' span will look fine.
Even though the gate post is very secure / stable I'm thinking that having a fence post two feet away would be more supportive over time.
(Post are on our side of property and not an area we see when enjoying the yard but is seen when driving thru the gate).

Thoughts?
Am I over thinking this? :whistling2:

I think it's pushing it. Go 2x6 for that section and you both win.

Or would it make more sense to make all the sections 7.14' and just split it evenly and each span would be slightly stronger anyway?

When I'm dead and gone will the next owner be dog cussing me for doing that???
