Faux stone exterior wall by pool - advice please!

Hello all...
My project- recently purchased a home that has a 5 foot tall wall that curves around a hot tub by a pool. Total length is about 22 feet.

Wall is made of CMU I believe (but I guess it could be cinder block).
It appears to have a stucco-type finish on it, and is painted white.
I don't think it's real stucco...I suspect it to be mortar smeared around to create a texture (it is fairly substantial, and does not flake or chip off by hand).

I am wondering if I can either use thinset or mortar to put up faux stone on it...or should I put up chicken wire/lathe first (and if so, how to affix that to the CMU?). Again, the texture that is on the wall now has pretty good ridges..but is painted (with what type of paint, I do not know).

I'm thinking it would be a nightmare to try and smooth out the wall and/or get the paint off ot if. Also, in my layman's thoughts, it seems like the wall is definitely rough enough to provide thinset or mortar a place to grab on to....but I reading some other posts, I guess I have to worry about the paint keeping the mortar from bonding.

Also, the wall is freestanding (built on concrete deck surrounding pool)

Appreciate any and all advice! Thanks in advance!

Decide on the stone you want to install and follow the manufacturers instructions based on your specific application. If you don't know exactly what it is, don't do anything until you do.

cmu = concrete masonary unit ( not specifically concrete block OR cinder block & NOT masonry - that's a fraternity ! )

we'd suggest it be mechanically anchored & rest on a sufficient foundation.

You can either remove the paint or you will have to lath and scratchcoat it.

If your really set on faux instead of the traditional real stone then I would like to suggest you do a search for faux panels. Back around 3 to 5 years ago I remember looking at faux panels and saying that I thought it was a neat idea but dismissed the idea because both the wife and I agreed that we couldnt find one that looked real. As of about a month ago I did another search and the web sites have multiplied a lot and there are some real looking ones now. Be sure to hold on to your wallet because these manufactures must be in love with them to sell them so high and I suspect there is a large profit margin until the market becomes flooded with competition. I feel they know the cost of faux and real stone when installed and are using it to there advantage.
Good luck

No matter how good the stone looks, the joints between panels will be obvious.
