faux stack stone - mortar
 

I'm putting faux stack stone on an indoor fireplace.... framed with cement board bonding surface... not using expanded metal. I have types "S" and "I" cement and masonary sand available (unmixed). I intend to lay stone from floor to hearth then hearth to mantle then mantle to ceiling in three installations. :thumbsup: so far, so good????

Q: In what proportions do I mix cement and sand and to what consistancy??
Should I use type "S" or type "I" cement? :huh:

What is the brand of faux stone?

Maybe I'm having a brain fart, but what's type "I" cement, never heard of it, or at least I don't think so.

I'm just finishing up using Pro-Stone from Owens-Corning on a basement project. I've been using a pre-mixed masonry mortar that is from Quikrete called CSC-4 (Code # 1191-84). They also have a product called Veneer Stone Mortar (Code # No. 1137). I can only get the CSC-4 locally. Both are specifically formulated for use with Veneer Stone (natural or manufactured). It takes me about three hours to use up an 80lb bag of CSC-4 and it stays workable the whole time as long as I keep it mixed. (about every 1/2 hour). I tried finding what proportions of sand, cement, lime they use, but it looks like it's a secret. That being said, I did a google search on this subject and found a thread:

Their formula was a 2 to 1 ratio of sand to cement. The sand was "mason" sand and the cement was Type-S. Looks like you're good to go.

Disregard, wiped the cobwebs off the brain. I assume he meant Type I Portland. Don't use the Portland alone.
