Is an external greatroom/building with 2 glass walls out of the leage for a beginner?

I have always planned to build a library addition for my home and after seeing this room http://loverlykiki.tumblr.com/post/1...lounge-library I am thinking this is how I would like to do it. Are there advanced structural requirements for this type of building due to the non load bearing walls and the height? Also will climate control be especially inefficient/difficult (the most important would be humidity control to protect the books)

Should I go for an easier design or else rely on professional contractors to do the framing?

Thanks for any advice.

Nice space!

That's some advanced framing---you could pull that off with the help a a top framer and yourself--or have the framing done by an experience crew and then step in---

You will need the services of an architect or designer (Andy Gump?)

A glass room like that will be expensive to heat and cool----

Glass that close to the floor must be tempered to be code and safe---

Dramatic space----

im with mike on this one.

this sort of wall typically requires advanced wall framing methods which are spec'd by an engineer. they also require teh use of engineered lumber do to greater spans and the need for longer engineered studs which have greater deflection ratings under wind loads.

ive framed several walls along the lines of what you want, i was an 4th yr apprentice when i did my first 3.. all on one house. i did some head scratching then. even now i stil scratch my head with some framing details

That is a beautiful space, definitely in need of engineering on something like that.
It would be interesting to find out from the local authorities what they would allow on all that glazing visa vie insulation requirements.

And I would think the big glazing area would require a steel moment frame, not even an engineered wood framing solution would do.

Andy.
