Exterior redo: Hardie over Cedar?

The sides are old cedar but other than needing scraping are in great condition, Can we pull the verticals, cover with Tyvek or Roof paper and then cover with Hardie sheets? Then use Hardie strips to recreate the verticals?

The 3 sides of the garage, side eaves of home and backside of home is what we are looking at doing.

I assume we would need to caulk seems or is this un necessary?
