exterior insulation foam board sheathing

On the house I am planning to build I planned to put an inch of insulated foam board sheathing on the exterior of the framing and fill the cavities between the studs with fiberglass insulation. My architect said it was a mistake. He said it would be too expensive to bring the foam boards into a rural area and they would be damaged in construction, but I have seem this recomended from many scources. Any opinions on this.

Where are you located ?

It is an advisable plan. PM me if you want more details on this approach. I can send you docs on how and why to do it. The main reason is to bring the wall's net R-Value up. The studs if not covered by your foam insulation work as a thermal bridge bringing the overall effect of insulation down. this is the only way to address this if you are working on an existing house. But other methods such as staggered studs are more commonly used if you are planning a new wall.
