Exposed sill plate/gap at stairs... how to protect?

Exposed sill plate/gap at stairs... how to protect?


From the garage, look at the bottom section of your drywall for any signs of water stains.

But the only way to know for sure is to remove some of those drywalls at the bottom and poke around with an awl.
