Exposed painting ceiling and finishing between joists

Hi
Just wondering how people have finished the area between joists on an exposed ceiling. Do you just drywall into that space? I was just going to use XPS and paint it black initially but it needs a 15 minute fire barrier in front of it I guess.

Could you tell us what you are planning to do?

If you are painting the underside of a floor structure---most times little is done except prime and paint---I've never heard of installing drywall between the floor joists---

I'm painting the ceiling of half my basement. The other side is laundry, utilities and storage. Partly I want to avoid overspray going to otherwise I basement that is not being finished but also want to give it a closed off look with exposed ceiling.

I suggest you experiment---usually there is to much in the way of X-bracing--pipes--conduit and such to be able to add drywall to the bottom of the subfloor---

If you decide to try it---there is a plastic J-channel that is used to hide the cut edges when drywall butts against a finished surface--

Do you end up seeing the edge of the j channel? I was really hoping for a clean edge so is just latex caulk an alternative to j channel?

Sure you will see the J-channel---but it's better than the ragged edge of paper the is left from cutting drywall.

Be sure you check with code in your area about exposed foams and the thermal barrier requirements.

They are more stringent than an ignition barrier.
