My house (built in 1889) has a deck on the back that's about 32x7. Most of the deck is attached to the side of the house; the last 6 feet are attached to a patio that's on top of cinderblocks.
I would like to widen the deck by about 6'. I've never done a project like this, but I'm sure I could build a 32x6 deck. I just want to make sure that I understand how to link the addition to the existing structure.
I did something similar to what you are thinking of doing. I had Lowe's design the new deck. On mine, the newer section was 2 feet lower than the original since my goal was to lower the handrail so it wouldn't block the view from the great room. I also used glass balusters instead of wood ones so we could see through them. The resultant deck was a huge success with he "boss" of this house.
