estimate material

I need to know how much shale to use for a road, is there a formula to use? I need to determine how many yards of material.

Depends on how thick on an average....lets say you want a 4 inch thick pad...figure 80 sq/ft per yard...just like we do concrete...and one more thing..you have to figure compaction. In Oklahoma, most shale roads are only a few inches after packing, and probably 5 inches when initially spread.

If the road or driveway is 12 feet wide it would take a yard and a half for every 10 feet of length.

thanks, I thought there might be a formula, like 1 mile of road 10 feet wide, 6 inches of material plus yards or something to that effect.

6 inches thick would be 60 square feet per yard applied.
